LOVELOCK - Pershing County High School Junior Nico Rodriguez was elected Nevada Association of Student Councils (NASC) Division III Vice President at the NASC State Conference last weekend in Elko.

"Two years ago, I told myself, one day I'm gonna be the Division III vice president. Two years later, I accomplished that promise, I'm gonna do the best I can to serve Nevada," Rodriguez said.

"I am so proud of Nico for having the ambition and drive to run for the Division III Vice President position in the first place. He is one of the hardest working, most dedicated students I have ever had the pleasure of meeting," school counselor Matthew Schottel said.

The NASC is an organization comprised of high school student council and leadership members from across the state. According to its constitution, the group's main objectives are to promote cooperation and communication among high schools through Nevada; to present an opportunity for the development of leadership and responsibility and to exchange ideas relating to student activities.

Rodriquez has a long resume of achievements during his high school career. He is currently the PCHS student body president. He has been in leadership since he was in eighth grade. For the past two years he has been the PCHS student body secretary/treasurer.

He holds a 4.0 GPA and is the captain of the PCHS Academic Team. Rodriquez participates in football, track and field and is co-captain on the PCHS cheerleading team. He also is part of this year's prom committee.

These activities and many more have taught him how to be an effective leader, he said.

His goal for his new position is to get more division III schools to participate in the NASC.

"Only seven out of 18 division III schools participate in the NASC. My goal is to get at least 75 percent participation," Rodriguez said.

"His ability to take charge of something, run with it, and see it through successfully to the end is not often seen in people his age," Schottel said.

The NASC honors school councils that contribute to activities such as community service, charitable financial giving and being active in school events, with awards. The highest of these awards is the Silver State Award. Rodriguez is committed to helping all division III school achieve this award, he said.

"Helping others win this award will help their community. I really want to help other student councils get this award," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez is humbled by the support he has received from the Lovelock community.

"I have to thank the community for supporting and believing in me. I wouldn't be able to do any of this if it wasn't for the support I've been shown," he said.

Rodriguez will continue in his position as the NASC Division III Vice President until next April.

"As far as his future is concerned, I see nothing but greatness ahead of him," Schottel said.
