LOVELOCK - The soup and salad dinner fundraiser held by the Pershing County Domestic Violence Intervention (PCDVI) on Oct. 3 was a success, organizers said.

"This was one of our best fundraising years ever. The house was packed," Pershing County Domestic Violence Intervention Director Flossy Redd said.

With over 200 people in attendance the group made close to $5,000, Redd said.

"With grants shrinking all over the nation, it is necessary to try to raise some of our own assistance money. PCDVI is quite fortunate to have such marvelous support and such a generous community," Redd said.

Feeding that many people was a feat in itself. No one went away hungry, with a variety of soups and salads to choose from, all donated by community members.

The event is community funded. Everything sold from the food to raffle and auction items were donated by local residents, service groups and businesses. Redd said there were around 105 items raffled, 17 items in the live auction and 14 in the silent auction.

The big ticket items in the live auction were a rocking horse handmade by Jeff Kerns and a carved wooden bench made by Mike Schwarzenberg. Each item brought PCDVI $300.

A load of gravel donated by Dennis deBraga received the highest bid in the silent auction, bringing in $160 for PCDVI.

"Dennis' gravel is always a big hit," Redd said.

The master of ceremonies at the event was Lovelock attorney Steve Evenson. Redd said that Evenson has been a big supporter of the PCDVI for many years and was extremely happy when "he graciously agreed" to be this year's emcee.

"I am a lawyer in this town and I can not tell you how much Pershing County DVI does for domestic violence victims and women in our community," Evenson told the crowd at the dinner, in between cracking jokes.

"He is amazing. Steve brings such life and fun to our event. There was never a dull moment while he had the microphone," Redd said.

Lovelock resident and professional auctioneer Mike Dewitt has donated his skills to the PCDVI for many years.

"For as long as I can remember," Redd said, when asked how long Dewitt had been the auctioneer for the event.

"Mike adds humor and gets those bids up for our benefit. He and Steve make a great team," Redd said.

Dewitt ended his the live auction with, "We'll see you all back here next year."
