Party in the Park to recognize crime victims, advocates

WINNEMUCCA - Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services and AmeriCorps members of Northern Nevada have teamed up to have a "Party in the Park" on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Vesco Park in celebration of National Crime Victims Rights Week and Global Youth Service Day.

This "party" will consist of an adult volleyball tournament from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m., bounce houses for kids, arts, crafts, and games (with prizes) for kids, and a "Solutions to Bullying" poster contest, and food/beverages for sale. This is a free event.

The single-elimination volleyball tournament is for eight-member teams of with prizes for 1st and 2nd place.

Organizers said the goal of the party is to celebrate Winnemucca's collaborative efforts to serve victims of crime. Community organizations are invited to display information about their agencies and current projects.

As part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, Advocates for Victims of Abuse is selling blue awareness bracelets for $1 each. The blue rubber bracelets are being sold by volunteers and businesses around Winnemucca. AVA can also be contacted directly via email at humboldtava@sbcglobal.net.

Also during April, with a program called Kisses for Hope and Change, WDVS is collaborating with Sonoma Heights Elementary School students and teachers on a campaign to honor heroes within the community. It is an opportunity for the students to write notes or draw pictures of how these heroes have helped them or a family member in a time of need. These notes along with Hershey's kisses will be delivered to the honorees to further encourage continued Hope and Change with the community.
