Ofelia Vickery passed away today, Jan. 20, 2012, at 4:25 p.m. after over a decade of battling Breast Cancer and Mesothelioma. Ofelia was born Maria Ofelia Cahilig Mandac on Sept. 11, 1954, to Venancia (Venny) Cahilig and Candido (Andy) Anicoche Mandac in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines.
Ofelia is proceeded in death by her parents and stillborn daughter Maria.
She is survived by David Lee Vickery, her husband of 39 years; her daughter, Maria Anastasia (Stacy) Mandac Vickery Pimental. She is also survived by her brother, Andy Cahilig Mandac; niece Andrea Fuentes Mandac Chiodo (Anthony); nephew Andre Fuentes Mandac; grandnephew Anthony Chiodo and grandniece, Lei Chiodo.
Ofelia arrived in San Francisco when she was 2 years old with her mother. Her father arrived in the United States in 1923. She attended Cathedral Grammar School, Presentation High School, and the University of San Francisco all in San Francisco. She bought a house in Vallejo, Calif., in 1979 and lived there until Stacy graduated from high school. The family then moved to Nevada. At the end she and David lived in Golconda where she raised Llamas, and Ofelia's pet pig. Gussie. She spent her last years watching old movies, working on the family tree, and talking to her "inside pets", pugs - Tasha and BoBo, pug/pit bull - Phred, ranch dog - Angie, Kitty - Cheddar, and African Grey - Rosie.
Ofelia worked at the Gap (when it had 8 stores), Pacific and Nevada Bell, UC Berkley, and Mullen & Filippi, as well as other little short term jobs to break up the monotony now and then.
Ofelia will be cremated as she always felt land should be for the living and not the dead. She just hopes everyone remembers her when she was well and energetic; when she cleaned up oil soaked birds, fed the homeless, and marching for/against causes. She was sad that she couldn't walk the fight against cancer but she gave donations to those who could. Ofelia wishes she could have done more with her life for other people.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society of Reno/Sparks, or Humboldt Volunteer Hospice, Box 843 Winnemucca, NV 89446.
Lovelock Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
