James E. Stewart "Hummer," 83, passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 11, 2015. He was born in Amarillo, Texas, on Oct. 9, 1931, to Loyd and Johnnie Stewart. He grew up with two older brothers, Bob and Bill Stewart, in Detroit, Mich.
At the age of 17, Jim entered and proudly served for the United States Air Force. While stationed in California, he met the love of his life, Carleen Buchel (Stewart). They fell in love and married on July 8, 1951. Jim and Carleen quickly started a family in California and by 1965 they had settled in Battle Mountain, Nev., with their six children, Michael, Donita, Wanda, Janet, Richard and Shirley.
Jim worked and retired from Battle Mountain Gold as a purchasing agent, while Carleen was known as the "babysitter." Family was a strong value to Jim and Carleen; their love was not just dedicated to the children of their own, but all the children they called their own.
Jim will always be remembered as a family man, but also being passionately involved in his community. Being the warm sociable person he was, Jim was quickly known by most. He became a prominent member in the Lions Club for many years. He sat as the president between 1974 and 1975. He was also a member of the Battle Mountain Masonic Lodge #23, which conciliated with Winnemucca in 2002. He still kept the membership current. Even though it was not in his community, the Masonic beliefs were important to him.
With many of his passions, fast pitch softball being one of them, the "Jim Stewart Softball Fields" were built. Jim was very well known in the softball community as "Hummer" for his pitching. He coached Babe Ruth, Little League and umpired high school baseball for numerous years. During the years 1990 and 1991, Jim and Carleen both dedicated their time to help establish the Mountain View Golf Course. Over the years they would frequently golf at Mountain View, make new friends, visit with old and teach family the sport they grew to love together.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Carleen Stewart; his parents, Loyd Washington and Johnnie Faye Ashley Stewart; his brother, Bob Stewart and his son, Paul Stewart.
Jim is lovingly survived by his brother, Bill Stewart (Fran); his children, Michael Stewart (Vicki), Donita Smith (Mike), Wanda Stewart, Janet Glenn, Richard Stewart (Dina), Shirley Holland (Walter), Terry Dunn and Shirley Shepard (Lennie); his 18 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
