Obituary: James Daniel "Dan" Garis

On Dec. 4, 2010, James Daniel Garis, affectionately known as "Dan", shed his mortality and escaped the bonds of gravity. Dan was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Dec. 10, 1962. He was a long-time resident of Humboldt County and attended Lowry High School. Danny was an aircraft mechanic and pilot, and worked to play. Dan loved to be outdoors, and was a dedicated hunter and avid fisherman. Whether chasing birds with his hound, Spaz, or on his snow machine, he could often be found on top of the mountains wearing a big grin. He was outspoken, competitive, irreverent and funny.

Dan lived his life according to his own rules. Of course, this meant that Dan was also a consummate bachelor: a tough trade-off but, according to Dan, cheaper in the long run. Dan experienced family life vicariously through his sister’s family and was exceptionally proud of his niece and nephew.

Dan leaves behind a wealth of wonderful memories, good friends, and a loving family. He is survived by his parents, Phil and Enid Garis of Winnemucca, siblings Nathan Garis, Philip and Melanie Garis, and Michelle and Brad Iund, niece Layne and nephew Grayson, uncles Larry and Gene Garis, and his beloved dogs, Lug and Twitch. He was preceded in his escape by his dear hounds, Spaz and Sassy. At Dan’s request, no formal services will be held. Dan asked that his friends raise a glass in his memory and think about him once in awhile.

Goodbye, dear friend, uncle, nephew, brother, and son. We’ll see you on the summit.

We appreciated all that Mary Orr and Humboldt Hospice did for our family and especially Dan. Contributions may be made to Humboldt Volunteer Hospice in his name at P.O. Box 843,Winnemucca, Nev. 89446.
