Douglas M. White passed away peacefully at his home in Yerington on Saturday morning, Dec. 25, 2010. He was 80.
Doug was born in Oakland, Calif., on Oct. 16, 1930, the son of Cecil and Mildred White. He grew up in Fresno, Calif. In his early years he spent as a bull rider in professional rodeos. In 1947 he enlisted and proudly served in the U.S. Army's 45th Calvary Recon Squad of the 33rd Combat team, followed by joining the Army reserves during the Korean War.
He married Julie Ann Eldredge Jan. 10, 1991, in Lake Tahoe.
Doug spent his lifetime as a professional in every aspect of the cattle industry. He was a respected trader and cattlemen throughout the western United States and Mexico and in 1980 - 82 was a member of the Feeder Cattle Advisory Board for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Doug later took on the challenge of rider, trainer and breeder of show jumping horses. His horses competed successfully in the United States, Canada and Europe while helping many young riders start their careers. Although being a fourth generation Californian, Doug and Julie made Nevada their home for the past 15 years. They had lived in Lovelock and Yerington. Doug's appreciation for land and animals prevailed throughout his life. He was a true cowboy, cattlemen and horseman.
Doug is survived by his wife, Julie Ann White, his daughters, Shelly White and Jo Jo White; his granddaughter, Victoria Pope Shirah; his brothers, Don White and Bert White.
A Celebration of Doug's Life will be held in the Spring of 2011. Cremation was under the direction of Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home 25 Hwy 208 Yerington, NV 89447.
