Obituary: Bruno McErquiaga

Bruno McErquiaga, 99, lifetime resident of Humboldt County, died Jan. 7, 2011.

Bruno was born May 11, 1911, to Bruno and Candida McErquiaga, the second oldest of 13 children. He was raised at the Horse Creek Ranch in Kings River Valley. He started herding sheep at 12 years old and was a rancher most of his life. He married his wife Carol March 15, 1941. They lived in Paradise Valley for several years, where they raised their four children and later moved to Winnemucca.

Bruno enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, animals, his garden, rodeos and anything else related to the cowboy lifestyle. Above all, he loved to visit and spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. If one thing is certain, it’s that Bruno came into this world the same way he lived his life and left it, a feisty buckaroo, his trademarks being his boots, a straw hat, a sly grin and a tale containing colorful anecdotes.

He is survived by his wife Carol McErquiaga of Winnemucca, daughters Beverly Pollock (Gary) of Island Park, Idaho, Rita Horn (Billy) of Starr Valley, Nev., Catherine Tipton (Ken) of Winnemucca, grandchildren Kelley Pollock (Tammy) of Winnemucca, Larry Pollock of Winnemucca, Karla Fiscus (Mike) of Applegate, Calif., Tennille Whitaker (Willy) of Starr Valley, Nev., Tara Tipton of Reno, Hailey Tipton of Boston, Mass., and great-grandchildren Anthony, Mitch, Daniel, Hank, Grace, and Molly, and sisters Mary Zabala, Grace Peluaga, Millie Graham, and Carmen (Marvin) Clausen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Alfonso McErquiaga, and siblings Hank, Frank, Connie, John, Julio, Joe, and Leon.

Happy trails to you, Grandpa, till we meet again.

A celebration of Bruno’s life will be held at a later date.
