Nevada Outdoor School (NOS) continues to provide free and very low-cost natural science and outdoor education to school-age children in classrooms, on field trips and at summer camps across Humboldt County and beyond. Based in Winnemucca, NOS has been an active member of the community for 11 years and continues to grow, with children benefiting from NOS programs in Winnemucca, Lovelock, Battle Mountain, Elko, and a number of rural schools including Paradise Valley, McDermitt, King's River, Orovada, Denio and Imlay. Classroom lessons and school field trips are provided for children from kindergarten to sixth Grade, with fun and educational topics aligned with school curriculum, from Native American history to the physics of rockets! Summer camps are available to various age groups and take place around Winnemucca and Elko, as well as further afield to locations such as the Santa Rosa Mountains and the Sierra Mountains.
NOS also conducts fun-for-all-the-family education events such as ATV safety, outdoor ethics, summer sleep-outs, nature hikes, garden programs and 'Nature at Noon' through the summer months.
The AmeriCorps National Service Program is managed by NOS for all placements and 'host sites' in regional northern Nevada, which in Winnemucca includes Pleasant Senior Center, Frontier Community Action Agency, Lowry High School, the Community Garden, and of course NOS. AmeriCorps provides willing help to nonprofits in the community in full-time, part-time and summer placements. As many as 30 individuals serve in the NOS-managed program annually, with 18,000 service hours provided in 2014 so far. Assistance provided to local nonprofits by AmeriCorp members each year is invaluable to the daily operations and long term success of these organizations.
Saturday, Aug. 23 will be NOS' annual fundraiser, the Buckaroo Dutch Oven Cook-off. Now in its sixth year, the event is a great opportunity for the whole family to have a day in the outdoors, participate in games and raffles, learn more about and support NOS, and most importantly sample some amazing Dutch oven cooking from our talented cooks! The cooks will have their creations judged in a friendly competition, including the much-coveted People's Choice Award. The Buckaroo Dutch Oven Cook-Off will be held at Riverview Park on West Bridge Street, and will be open to the public at 12 p.m. with public tasting starting at 1 p.m.
NOS once again thanks the community for their continued support, and encourages everyone to get outside and be inspired by the great outdoors! For more information on NOS' programs and the Buckaroo Dutch Oven Cook-Off visit the website at www.nevadaoutdoorschool.org.
