LOVELOCK - Sometimes life is not tidy, peaceful or perfect. Parents of children who may have physical disabilities or cogitative disorders know all too well how difficult life can be.
Occasionally, the very struggle to simply get through the day keeps parents from reaching out to friends, family or professionals who may be able to help. But Nevada Parents Encouraging Parents (PEP) is working to help.
This 15-year-old nonprofit organization provides information, services and training to Nevada families of children with disabilities. PEP services are about empowering families to be life-long advocates for their children through education and skill building. PEP recognizes that parents are experts on their children and must learn about disabilities, intervention needs, and how to develop a support system to meet those needs.
Nevada PEP will be in Lovelock to hold two days of training. On Monday, Sept. 10, advocates from PEP will be at the Pershing County Library at 10 a.m. to present a clinic on the Individual Education Program. This workshop includes a brief overview of the IEP process and a question and answer session. Please bring your child's IEP so you can review it during the class.
An IEP is designed to meet the special educational needs of a child who may have a disability. This individualized coursework is intended to help children reach their educational goals through the support of educators and related service providers.
On Wednesday, Sept. 12, Nevada PEP will present "Understanding ADHD Training."
Parents and teachers of children who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) face different challenges when helping children achieve appropriate behaviors at home and school.
When a child has ADHD, traditional approaches to teaching appropriate behavior may not work well. Join the group as they take a look at some strategies that can help a child become successful in home, community, and school environments. This free training will be held from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Pershing County Library.
If you are interested in attending either of these free seminars, please call Nevada PEP at 800-216-5188, or you can register online at www.nvpep.org under the trainings link.
Formed 15 years ago, PEP is a family of families caring, supporting and guiding one another through the challenges of raising children. When family and friends don't understand, parents always have someone to talk to at PEP. You are not alone. All of the PEP staff has been impacted by disability in some way and know that navigating a challenging support system alone can be overwhelming
Programs and Services offered by Nevada PEP are supported in part by the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Administration on Developmental Disabilities U.S. Department of Health and Human Services - Family Support 360 Centers.
