BATTLE MOUNTAIN - A semi-truck ended up on its side after hitting a tire on I-80 and then striking the rear of a pickup truck parked along the highway, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred Aug. 21 approximately 15 miles east of Battle Mountain on I-80.

The NHP said in a news release that a ford F-150 pickup was parked on the eastbound shoulder. The driver of the pickup was out of his vehicle warning traffic of a tire in the travel lane.

A semi-tractor trailer was traveling eastbound on I-80. The driver was on his cellphone reporting a brush fire and was distracted, the NHP said. The commercial vehicle struck the tire, which caused the driver to lose control of the truck and strike the right rear of the pickup.

The commercial vehicle traveled off the right paved shoulder and overturned on its side. No injuries were reported.

The semi truck was driven by Richard Smith, of Omaha, Neb. The driver of the 1998 Ford F-150 pickup was Jacob Dillon, of Red Bluff, Calif.
