WINNEMUCCA - Scrap Domestic Violence (ScrapDV) is set to launch No More, Know More in northern Nevada on Oct. 1 with plans to maintain the campaign throughout National Domestic Violence Awareness month.
No More, Know More is an awareness campaign to increase outreach to programs and resources for those who are victims of domestic abuse.
ScrapDV plans to Paper the Town in communities throughout northern Nevada with brochures, posters and reference materials that will list specific help centers that are relevant to each town.
Earlier this month, the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C., released its latest study which found that for the third year in a row, Nevada again leads the nation statistically in the rate of female homicides. Of those homicides, well over half were committed in instances of domestic abuse.
ScrapDV wants to highlight and bring attention to the problem of domestic abuse within Nevada and get people talking about it.
There are resources for victims of abuse and many sufferers don't know the programs actually exist and are unclear of where they can turn for help, according to a news release.
"Our goal is to see that every member of every community knows where they can go and who they can call. We also want people to know where they can donate and volunteer. Saying no more domestic violence requires people to know more and talk about it. We can end domestic abuse in Nevada if we work together," said JoAnn Casalez, executive director of ScrapDV.
"I applaud the efforts of ScrapDV, which is working with all domestic violence agencies in Nevada to assist in providing funding for much- needed projects that increase awareness of the problems caused by domestic violence," said Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto. "This educational awareness program, No More, Know More, will get people talking about abuse, which is the first step in reducing domestic violence."
ScrapDV's mission is two-fold - to create proactive awareness on the effects of domestic abuse within Nevada, where the domestic violence homicide rate is twice the national average, while reactively funding, through grants, domestic abuse programs and shelters within the state.
ScrapDV funds programs whose primary focus are victims of domestic violence. Each program they fund helps improve facilities and services that encourage survivors to reach their fullest potential and achieve self-sufficiency through encouragement, case management, accountability, awareness and trust in a positive and secure environment.
As an organization, ScrapDV actively seeks funding within the mining industry. The goal is to proactively partner with mines based in Nevada and the surrounding areas to take donations of their discarded scrap metals which in turn can be recycled for cash revenue for ScrapDV to use in the campaign to end domestic violence within Nevada.
