BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Senior Center had visitors from the State of Nevada Aging and Disability Service Division. They met with our director, Sandi Smith, Gene Etcheverry, and a couple of seniors, Vera Smith and Helen Thompson.

They have been doing a need survey throughout the state. The biggest problem they wanted to address was the state is trying to help seniors stay in their home environments longer and out of nursing homes. The nursing homes are expensive and also are full. One of the main problems for seniors seems to be proper transportation for doctor visits and getting maintenance supplies for their homes. The state representatives wanted to know how these problems could be met in our community. It was mentioned that Lander County is very supportive of our senior population. I guess with many of the cutbacks in government spending some programs have been cut or eliminated. If the needed programs could be reinstated it could help those struggling to stay in their homes. Some common issues might be an eviction notice, problems with your rental home, a foreclosure notice and the need for housing assistance or public housing.

Hopefully, most attended the recent Health Fair and got their flu shots. If you missed it, call the public health nurse, Brenda Keller at 635-2386 for a shot. A drive thru was done this year. About 450 shots were given that morning.

The Senior Center is having their bake sale-Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. We are trying to make some pincushions for the bazaar. One thing is certain, the pincushions never go out of fashion. Come and see the antique like items, the decorated gourds and much more. The seniors are the best cooks in town. We will be serving homemade chili and corn bread, stew and biscuits. Free coffee for everyone. We hope to see everyone and please come and have lunch also.

Ervin and Helen Thompson recently visited the coast of California enjoying the redwood trees. We stopped at the National redwood park and then saw the coastal redwoods in Crescent City in Stout's Groove. We walked on the beach and watched the kids try to surf on their boards. The waves were high and the kids kept falling off their boards. Maybe next time I will try it.

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful fall we are having. See you on Nov. 19 at the Senior Center for our bake sale and bazaar.
