ELKO - Newmont Mining Corporation recently completed its 2012 NMC Legacy Fund campaign in Nevada and is very pleased to announce that its employees have pledged a record $900,000-plus through the workplace-giving program, surpassing last year's pledges by more than $250,000.
"This is a staggering amount of money and it makes all of us at Newmont very proud of our company and the people who work for us. Every year, the generosity of our employees continues to grow," said Mary Korpi, director of external relations for Newmont's Nevada operations.
Korpi added that, as in previous workplace-giving campaigns, the employee pledges will again be matched dollar for dollar by Newmont, providing for over $1.8 million to some 120 local non-profit organizations in the northern Nevada communities where Newmont operates, including Elko, Carlin, Battle Mountain, Winnemucca, Wells and the Wendover area, as well as other communities within Elko, Eureka, Lander and Humboldt counties.
"Our employees' generosity in supporting local community organizations that provide valuable social services and programs is to be commended. Their willingness to assist others exemplifies their commitment to maintaining healthy and vibrant communities where they live and work," said Tom Kerr, Newmont's North American regional senior vice president. "Newmont is proud to partner with our employees in the NMC Legacy Fund as we match their generosity."
In 2010, the NMC Legacy Fund's first year, Newmont employees pledged approximately $650,000, which was paired with the company match for a total $1.3 million. Final quarterly payments from that sum will be made to the non-profit organizations at the end of this year.
Korpi emphasized that 100 percent of the money contributed through the fund goes to the designated nonprofit community organizations and social service programs. Newmont covers all overhead and administrative costs separately.
Employees also have the option to donate to an endowment fund that falls under the Legacy Fund, Korpi said. "With annual company contributions and employee donations, the endowment fund will grow over the years and be available to the communities after mining ends in the region; It will be a wonderful legacy to leave behind," she commented.
A very popular aspect of the employee-giving portion of the program allows for Newmont employees to direct their contributions to specific non-profit organizations that meet the social service needs in the local communities. In addition to the employee-giving campaign and community endowment fund, Newmont's community investment program also includes a community contributions program.
"As Newmont employees continue to demonstrate our values through leadership in social responsibility, the NMC Legacy Fund builds upon our successful investment in the sustainability of all communities in which we operate," Kerr said.
