Newmont donation helps Battle Mountain Recreation Center reach planning budget goal

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Newmont (www.newmont.com) donated $15,000 to the Battle Mountain Recreation Center. Shar Peterson, external relations representative, presented the check to board members on Nov. 5.

Battle Mountain Recreation Center, Inc., has reached its planning budget goal of $45,000. Newmont's generous donation supports creating reliable plans to help guide the future recreation center through to the implementation and closure phases of the project.

Creating accurate plans to manage time, costs, quality, risk, external challenges and change are important to the committed group of people behind this initiative.

"The Phoenix Community Investment Committee is pleased to see this organization's approach to the rec center project by taking the steps to evaluate the community needs and conduct a feasibility study. Performing these studies comes with a cost, but provides valuable information as to whether or not a project is sustainable and should go forward," Peterson said.

"Newmont's financial contribution allows our team to exercise due diligence," Laura Schmidt, Battle Mountain Recreation Center Board treasurer said. "The success, sustainability and financial stability of the proposed facility are the underlying goals of all the planning activities."

The Battle Mountain Recreation Center Board of Directors are motivated by the community assessment outcomes. An overwhelming 72 percent of respondents believe that a new recreation center is very important and 23 percent of respondents believe a new center is important to the Battle Mountain community. These numbers along with additional data validate efforts for this project.

Lander Economic Development Authority (LEDA) initiated efforts to explore the feasibility of a recreation facility in Battle Mountain. Lander County commissioners have supported the exploratory efforts and activities to date.

Three of the area's largest employers have made financial contributions for assessments and organizational development. The Battle Mountain Recreation Center, Inc., is preparing to launch a capital campaign in the first half of 2013 to secure funding for the development of the facility.

The mission of the Battle Mountain Recreation Center is to improve the quality of life for our residents by providing youth development services, recreational opportunities, health enhancement services and community development through facilities and programs that build a healthier spirit, mind and body for all individuals regardless of ability to pay.

Battle Mountain Recreation Center is a recognized organization with the state of Nevada.
