New conservation specialist in Ely

CARSON CITY - Anita Lahey has been hired as a conservation specialist for the State Conservation Districts Program. Lahey will be based in Ely.

This position is one of three field staff that will assist on a statewide basis, as well as at a regional level, with the implementation of conservation programs and projects. She will assist in developing and implementing projects focused on the sagebrush ecosystem. The other Conservation Specialists, Doni Bruland and Steve Weaver, are located in Elko and Winnemucca respectively. The specialists coordinate local activities with Joe Locurto, the Conservation Districts Program Coordinator in Carson City, as well as with the Sagebrush Ecosystem Technical Team.

Lahey will work directly with the Conservation Districts of White Pine, the southern portion of Eureka, Tonopah, Lincoln County, Esmeralda, Southern Nye County and the Conservation District of Southern Nevada. She will also be working with local and county governments, federal agencies in the area, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Nevada Association of Conservation Districts.

As a former ecologist on the Walker River Restoration Project with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Lahey managed federal grants and contracts, wrote scopes of work and assisted in landscape scale habitat modeling on the $10 million project. She also managed relations between USFWS and private landowners on matters including access and use of private property for restoration efforts.

Previously, Lahey worked as a Biological Science Technician for the U.S. Geological Survey in Caliente and Moapa, conducting aquatic habitat surveys, identifying vegetation and assessing the distribution and abundance of endangered species. She also held positions as a Research Associate for the Department of Fish & Wildlife Conservation at Virginia Tech University, Research Technician for the Arizona Game and Fish Department and Fisheries Crew Chief with the University of Nevada, Reno.

Lahey earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont and is pursuing her Master of Science degree in Fish & Wildlife Conservation from Virginia Tech.
