RENO - The University of Nevada will host Jayme King Day on Sunday to honor the two-time cancer survivor and help raise funds toward the former Wolf Pack softball player's medical expenses.
The Wolf Pack takes on Boise State and King will throw out the first pitch prior to the 1 p.m. start. Tickets are just $5 and all proceeds will be donated to the King family for medical expenses.
Nevada will wear teal jerseys - King's favorite color - during the game to honor King. The special jerseys from Nike will be available for purchase after the game.
Hometown Health is sponsoring the special day and is donating funds to the King family. Wristbands with the hashtags #BatterUp16 and #CancerFree are also available.
A Fernley native and graduate of Fernley High School, King played two sports at Shasta Junior College before transferring to Nevada to play softball during the 2011 season. After her first season with the Pack, King was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare bone cancer, in her knee.
She underwent chemotherapy and then surgery, followed by another round of chemotherapy and, in 2012, doctors told her that her cancer was in remission.
But the cancer returned in 2013 and King endured another round of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Near the end of last year, King had beaten cancer for a second time and she is back in classes at Nevada this semester and will graduate in December.
"We want Sunday to be one of those special and memorable days because Jayme is such a special and memorable person," Nevada coach Matt Meuchel said. "Her story is one of perseverance and inspiration and we're all so fortunate to have her in our lives."
King has her sights set on returning to Fernley to open a community recreation center.
