WINNEMUCCA - Nevada Outdoor School is offering multiple routes to safety certification. Available opportunities include ASI (ATV Safety Institute) and OASYREP (Oregon ATV Safety and Youth Rider Endorsement Program) courses.
The ASI course is designed for riders of all ages and takes about four hours to complete. This training course covers 16 lessons including stopping, turning, traversing hills, riding over obstacles and Tread Lightly! principles. Upon successful completion, participants will receive their ASI Safety Card. This card can be used in states such as California and Oregon that require ATV riders to hold a valid safety card.
The OASYREP consists of two parts and is for ATV riders ages 6-15. Initially, participants must go to http://www.rideatvoregon.org and complete an online ATV safety course. The second part is a hands-on evaluation course which takes about 2 hours. Kids taking this course will be evaluated based on their mental and physical riding capabilities. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be issued an Oregon ATV Safety Education Card. This card is required for all ATV riders in Oregon and this hands-on course is required for youths.
All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are a great way to explore the vast and beautiful lands in our area. There are many trail systems and recreational areas (such as the Sand Dunes) perfect for ATV enthusiasts here in Winnemucca and beyond. Knowing how to operate an ATV safely is the number one thing you can do to ensure a good recreational experience. This is especially true for kids. Some states, such as Oregon, require kids under 16 to take a hands-on riding course. However, even if safety classes are not a requirement, they are still very useful and can help save lives. Nevada Outdoor School's (NOS) mission is to inspire exploration of the natural world, responsible stewardship of our habitat and dedication to community. NOS encourages people of all ages to get outside and enjoy their natural environment through hiking, biking, camping, fishing, ATVing, etc. However, safe and responsible recreation is key.
