WINNEMUCCA - Nevada Outdoor School is sending out an invitation to all fifth, sixth and seventh grade girls to attend The New Horizons Girls Camp. The camp will be held July 30 through Aug. 4, and registration will close Monday, July 29, at noon.

Nevada Outdoor School has been organizing girls camp for fifth and sixth graders since 2006, so this will be the seventh summer for the camp.

This year, the decision was made to open up registration for seventh graders as well to give more girls the opportunity to have a great summer experience.

Nevda Outdoor School's Brenna Archibald is one of the organizers of this year's New Horizons Girls Camp. She said activities for the first three days of this year's camp, Tuesday through Thursday, will include games, swimming, crafts, a hike, and the opportunity to dance-exercise with Zumba.

Those first three days, the girls will also be learning some great outdoor skills that will give them confidence in their abilities. Campers will have the opportunity to meet several women from the local community who have been asked to come to camp and talk about things they've learned that could benefit the girls and what they did to prepare for their careers and life.

Archibald said on Friday campers will travel to Elko for the chance to explore the California Trail Interpretive Center and take a tour of the Great Basin College Campus in Elko.

On Saturday, the girls will have the opportunity participate in yoga and have an overnight campout in Water Canyon. Archibald said part of the campout will include a campfire program full of skits, songs and laughter.

Sunday will wrap up the week with a reflection and group celebration at Spare Time Bowling.

In addition to Nevada Outdoor School staff members, local volunteers will be working with the girls during the upcoming camp. Archibald said goals of the camp are to strengthen self esteem, build new and positive relationships, help campers feel comfortable and confident, while identifying with women in the community and possible future careers.

Camp registration is $35 and Monday, July 29, at noon is the deadline for signups.

Archibald said if a girl would like to go to camp, but the registration fee is holding her or her family back, scholarships are available by calling the Nevada Outdoor School office.

More information on New Horizons Girls Camp is available at the NOS office. The phone number is (775) 623-5656. Information is also available online at the NOS website at www.nevadaoutdoorschool.org.

The website also has information on other outdoor activities planned for northern Nevada individuals and families this summer and fall. Upcoming events include Nevada Outdoor School's Family Campout on July 27 - 28, and the Fifth Annual Buckaroo Dutch Oven Cook-Off Aug. 24.

Nevada Outdoor School was started in Winnemucca 10 years ago as part of the AmeriCorps program.

Nevada Outdoor School's goal is to inspire exploration and enjoyment of the natural world, encourage responsible stewardship of the outdoors and invite young people to get involved in their communities.

In addition to programs like summer girls' camp, young people working for NOS come into Humboldt County classrooms throughout the school year to teach hands-on, inquiry-based science lessons on the outdoors and environmental education that have been developed to align with the curriculum and goals of the Humboldt County School District.
