Nevada motorcyclist fatality rate on constant rise

Although motorcycles are only 3 percent of all registered vehicles in the state of Nevada, motorcyclist deaths represent more than 19 percent of all roadway fatalities in both 2013 and 2014. Sadly, Nevada has lost one of its riders already this year.

Motorcyclists need to ride defensively and within their skill limits. With the mild winter, riders are eager to be out on the roads, therefore all motorists need to be aware of the increased risks and be extra attentive to their surroundings while adhering to these basic rules:

Motorcyclists:

1. Attend formal training and become licensed.

2. Wear full protective gear, especially a DOT-compliant helmet.

3. Ride unaffected by intoxication; even buzzed riding can affect reaction time.

4. Assume others don't see you. Ride like you're invisible.

5. Maintain 360-degree awareness.

6. Create a space cushion all around.

7. Enter intersections and curves with caution while keeping your speed low.

8. Continuously practice emergency braking and swerving.

9. Save aggressive riding for the racetrack.

10. Refresh your skills and knowledge regularly. Life-long learning is one of the keys to safe riding.

Vehicles sharing the road with motorcyclists:

1. Look Once, Look Twice for Motorcycles - especially around intersections.

2. Give motorcycle riders plenty of room. Don't tailgate motorcycles.

3. Check your blind spots for motorcycles before changing lanes.

4. Drive defensively to avoid accidental collisions.

5. Give riders extra space. Don't crowd lanes when passing just because they are smaller.

"Motorcycles are often difficult to see, not to mention much more vulnerable than a passenger in a car. We always stress the importance of staying attentive and focused while driving, but with the recent increase of motorcycles due to warmer weather, this simple task can really help save the lives of Nevada riders," said Traci Pearl, Office of Traffic Safety/Department of Public Safety.
