Nevada Guard facility in Carlin opens Thursday

CARSON CITY - The official opening of the Nevada Guard's new Elko County Readiness Center in Carlin will take place Thursday, April 18, at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The readiness center is located at the site that was previously the University of Nevada, Reno's Fire Science Academy.

The Nevada Office of the Military purchased 15 acres at the fire science academy in 2012 in order to construct the Elko County Readiness Center. The cost to purchase and improve the facility included $8.6 million from federal funds and $7.9 million from state monies. The new 5,376 square-foot facility will be primarily used by the 593rd Transportation Company.

The readiness center, located in the southwest corner of the campus, features administrative space, lockers, and secure storage areas.

Also, several existing fire academy buildings, including an academic building and fire station, have been remodeled for military use. The academic building has been modified to include administrative space and two learning center classrooms. The fire station remodel includes a maintenance training work bay, a simulation bay and a gymnasium.

The Te-Moak Western Shoshone Tribe will give a blessing of the land and facility during the ceremony.
