National reality show shoots episode in Winnemucca, Unionville

PROVO, Utah - What would you do if someone knocked on your door and asked you to share your life story with the rest of the world?

This is the concept behind the BYUtv series "The Story Trek," which is 10 episodes into its second season. An episode was recently shot in Unionville and Winnemucca.

In each new episode, take the unique opportunity to enter the homes of strangers and discover the stories of their lives. Because the shows are mostly unplanned and completely unscripted, the team has only a general idea of where it will be filming and no idea at all what's going to come out of the mouths of the people they interview.

But that's the magic of the show - whatever does come becomes the material for the episode. The team goes door to door and sits down with ordinary people to find out their stories - that's it! That's the entire formula.

Todd Hansen, a former reporter for Fox 13 News in Utah, is the host and producer of "The Story Trek," and he asserts the show works because everybody has an interesting story to tell. But the show has its challenges. "Most people aren't quite sure what to think when we knock on their door," Hansen says. In fact, he claims that "probably about three-quarters of them think we're there to announce they've won a big prize."

But, as Hansen assures, the show is perfectly aligned with the BYUtv motto, "See the Good in the World." "We meet people from all walks of life, and we meet them right where they are," Hansen says. Thus, no matter where the story begins, it almost always comes around to something positive. "We've never had to drag that out of anybody."

The Nevada episode will air tonight at 5 p.m. BYUtv can be seen on Dish Network channel 9403, DirecTV 374 and 500 cable systems across the country.
