CARSON CITY - Nevada was recently selected by the National Governors Association (NGA) to participate in the Learning Network on Improving Birth Outcomes. The Network assists states with their policies and practices relevant to improving birth outcomes, defined and measured by incidence of preterm births and infant mortality.
"We are honored to be selected for the Learning Network on Improving Birth Outcomes," said Tracey D. Green, M.D., chief medical officer. "I am encouraged to see that NGA recognizes birth outcomes as a significant public health challenge."
Nevada applied to the Learning Network because even though infant mortality rates have trended downward since 2007, racial and ethnic disparities remain. Participating will result in increased effectiveness, coordination, and collaboration among existing birth outcomes-related activities in our state.
The learning network will focus on demonstrated best practices of states with improved birth outcomes. Participating states will learn about coordinating activities across agencies and available options to accelerate the pace of improving outcomes and reducing costs.
NGA will convene sessions in Nevada to facilitate the process of improving policies and hold a networking conference for states to share about lessons learned and how to improve their planning processes.
