PARADISE VALLEY - The Santa Rosa Basque Club in Paradise Valley held its annual Mus Tournament March 23 at Stonehouse Country Inn.
The Spanish - Basque card game combines aspects of poker, chess and sneaking signs to a partner to try to win points. It's played by all ages and both men and women participate. The Mus tournament brought nine teams together, with participants from Winnemucca, Boise, McDermitt, Paradise Valley and San Francisco.
The Boise Basque Club advertised the mus tournament to their members, and word of mouth spreads between the clubs.
Mus player Annie Gavica said many people enjoy the game so much that they are members of multiple clubs just so they can play in the various tournaments.
The mus team of Jude Gary and John Krakau, both of Boise, won the tournament. The second place team of Mike Aguerre and Gina Espinal-Aguerre were from San Francisco, and both teams will be representing he Santa Rosa Club in the National Mus Tournament in Chino, Calif., on June 8.
Since its inception 12 years ago, Santa Rose Basque Club has held wine tastings/dinners, festivals and small social gatherings.
After the mus tournament, the Paradise Valley Community Hall was packed for a dinner by Chef Jesus Alcelay of Onati, Gipuzkoa, Spain.
