BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Saturday, Aug. 11, the Battle Mountain Chamber of Commerce hosted its monthly movie in the park at Elquist Park, where about 300 adults and children gathered to enjoy the evening watching a movie outdoors.
The Battle Mountain Chamber of Commerce recently purchased a movie system to show movies outdoors. The system was purchased with four individual donations of $3,500 from Newmont, Marigold, Barrick, and Wells Fargo. The Chamber of Commerce tentatively is planning to present a movie on the second Saturday of every month.
As things progress, Executive Director Paula Tomera hopes to host a drive-in movie in the parking lot of the Battle Mountain High School.
Guests bring blankets, beanbag chairs, and whatever else they enjoy during a movie. This event is geared for all ages. There are food and beverage vendors, new bathrooms, the new children's play area, and plenty of soft green grass to get comfortable on for a couple of hours while enjoying a new movie every month.
Tentatively, there is a movie scheduled for Aug. 25 during the Battle Mountain Burners hot August nights celebration. It could possibly be a movie with some cool old classic cars and the music to go with it.
Until things get on a more permanent schedule, Tomera will list the scheduled movies on the Battle Mountain Chamber of Commerce website, www.battlemountainchamber.com, or it will be on the new sign in front of the Battle Mountain Civic Center when it is installed.
The park starts getting set up for the movie just before dark, with the movies always tentatively scheduled to begin at 8:45 p.m. People come early and get their areas set up so their kids can play on the park toys before the movie begins. Th event is free to the public. Bring the kids out they will enjoy playing in the park and watching a movie without 100-degree temperatures.
