WINNEMUCCA - As of Friday, June 7, the Humboldt County Library's Summer Reading Program is now in full swing.
Library staff members said they had quite the crowd on the opening day kick-off party with over 250 children signed up.
Families enjoyed visits from Smokey the Bear, Winnemucca Police Department's motorcycle officer, the Nevada Outdoor School, an ambulance and the Winnemucca Rural Fire Department.
The Humboldt County Library also provided a free pancake breakfast, numerous carnival-style games, face painting and glitter tattooing.
This past week the library showed the movie "Holes" free to the public and also hosted a craft day on Friday where participants made terrariums.
Throughout the entirety of the summer break, the library will have other weekly crafts, activities, guest speakers, and special events for children, parents, and family members.
Plan to join in the fun at the tie dye craft this Friday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is a small charge ($2 to $8) for each item you bring to dye.
One of the library's biggest craft projects is the chance to teach younger boys and girls how to sew their very own lap quilt. This craft is geared toward children ages 11-18, and there is a charge of $15 for this two-day program. Call now to sign up because space is limited! The number is (775) 623-6388.
Parents still have until the end of July to sign up their son or daughter up for all the fun prizes they can win for reading.
Once they have signed up for our Summer Reading Program, children are encouraged to read as much as you can, and they are entitled to grab up to three prizes each week until July 31.
After that date, library staff hopes that you join us on Friday, Aug. 2, for an ending party where we will be giving away countless prizes, gifts and other thank-yous.
