Montero, Stremler win state high school rodeo titles in Ely

The Humboldt County Rodeo Club will be sending three of its members to the National Finals High School Rodeo, after its performances at the Nevada State High School Association State Finals Rodeo held in Ely June 13 - 15.

Savannah Montero will be headed to Rock Springs, Wyo., for the national finals in goat tying. She won the overall state championships in goat tying with a strong performance at the state finals.

Montero won the first go-around with a time of 8.16 seconds, which was just .13 seconds ahead of Sydney Howard. Montero recorded a time of 9.70 in the second go-around and a stopped the clock at 10.61 in the short go-around.

Montero went into the state finals in second place, but rallied to win the goat tying for a second consecutive year.

In addition, Montero finished fifth in breakaway roping and qualified for the Silver State Rodeo in Winnemucca. Montero finished seventh in the all-around standings.

Luke Logan finished second in the saddle bronc and will head to the national finals. Logan recorded a score of 62 points in the second go-around, which tied him for first, in his only qualified ride of the weekend.

Logan will compete in Winnemucca at the Silver State Rodeo alongside Jake Logan in the team roping. The duo finished fifth in the season-long standings.

Dawson Cassinelli placed fourth in the bull riding and earned a spot in Wyoming. He finished second in the first go-around with 60 points and he won the second go-around with 69 points. He didn't stay his bull for the full eight seconds in the short go-around.

Clay Stremler, who rides as an independent, ran away with the saddle bronc title. He was the only competitor to record a score in each of the go-arounds.

Stremler had the only qualified ride in the first go and scored 69 points. He tied for first in the second go around with Luke Logan, scoring 62 points. He recorded a score of 63 in the short go-around and once again was the only rider to stay on for the full eight seconds.

Jake Logan qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo on the strength of an eighth-place finish in tie-down roping. Dusty Robertson was 12th in goat tying and was 14th in breakaway roping.

Competitors that finish first through fourth in the year-long standings move on to the national finals, to be held July 13 - 19.

Those that place fifth through 15th advance to the Silver State International Rodeo, which takes place June 29 - July 5 at the Winnemucca Events Complex.

The all-around cowboy for the year was Cord Hendrix and Hayley Dalton-Estes was the all-around cowgirl. Caleb Hendrix earned rookie cowboy honors and Makenah Faircloth was named the rookie cowgirl.

The state champions for the season included bareback (Jake Thacker), barrels (Danielle Bignell), breakaway roping (Sydney Howard), bulls (Cam Benbough), boys cutting (Cord Hendrix), girls cutting (Alley Moreda), goats (Montero), poles (Bignell), saddle bronc (Stremler), steer wrestling (Chance Guerrero), team roping header (Dalton-Estes/Jesse Estill) and tie-down roping (Jordan Taylor).[[In-content Ad]]
