WINNEMUCCA - Two Winnemucca athletes have been chosen to represent Nevada at the Special Olympics 2014 USA Games next June in Princeton, N.J.

Cristina Montanez and Jenny Alarcon will be two of the 14 delegates to compete for Nevada. Montanez will participate in track and field and Alarcon in bowling.

"It is such a great honor for them and our group in Winnemucca," said coach Leslie Molina. "With just 14 athletes competing from Nevada, it is a big accomplishment. I am so excited for them. They are great young ladies."

Over 3,600 athletes from all over North America will converge on New Jersey for the seven-day event. Over 100 females and males, respectively, will compete in the bowling competition.

The event is broken into singles and doubles (male, female and mixed). More than 200 females and males, respectively, will take part in the track and field.

The event, which is being billed as the largest and most diverse of its kind ever, will not just showcase the athletes competing, but will also serve as a platform to expose to the largest media and audience possible all that Special Olympics does for the lives of thousands, including its programs in education, health and community building.

The competitions will be held at venues throughout Mercer County, N. J., including Princeton University, Rider University, The College of New Jersey, Mercer County Park and several area private schools.

In addition to the many showcased sports, Special Olympics athletes will participate in events that include an opening ceremony at the Prudential Center, a closing ceremony at Sun National Bank Center, a boardwalk themed Olympic Town and a Special Olympics Unified Sports Festival.

"Cristina and Jenny have been great role models for everyone in our group in Winnemucca," Molina said. "They do their best to help everyone."
