Missing man found safe in McDermitt area

WINNEMUCCA - A McDermitt man was found safe last week after a search and rescue team was dispatched on a report of him missing.

According to a release issued by the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, officials received notice on Monday, Nov. 28, that a man was missing in the McDermitt area of the county.

The caller advised that her husband, a 55-year-old male, had gone out into the desert due east of McDermitt to cut wood on Saturday, Nov. 26. As of Monday morning he had not returned home.

A strike team of Humboldt County Volunteer Search and Rescue personnel immediately deployed to the north county area. After learning of the approximate location that the individual went to (area of Quinn River Cabin), the Search and Rescue Unit began their search. Within a few hours time, they located the subject walking westbound.

According to the subject, his truck had broken down and he slept in it Saturday and Sunday evening. On Monday morning he decided to hike out. He was in good physical condition.

Persons traveling into the back country should always remember to tell someone of the approximate area that they are going, and when they expect to return. They should also take warm clothing and sufficient food (snacks) and water.

Over the last several years, the Search and Rescue Unit has also located persons who had personal GPS alarm units with them. These units, when activated, place an emergency call to a center with the exact coordinates of where the subject is located. A device like this could be extremely beneficial when traveling in areas where there is little or no cell phone coverage.
