Ministerial Association calls for Day of Service; Public invited to participate

Saturday, June 23, area do-gooders are asked to gather at Pioneer Park at 8 a.m. to organize into groups and tackle a list of service projects that are being compiled by leaders from the Winnemucca Ministerial Association.

This is the second annual "Community Day of Service." Last year, about 75 volunteers completed an impressive list of tasks including replacing a single mother's roof, painting the entire outside of a home for a widowed mother of three, performing yard work, hauling garbage, laying thousands of feet of sod, making roof and swamp cooler repairs and cleaning up the Pioneer Cemetery located across the Humboldt River from Pioneer Park.

Winnemucca Grammar School also received a spruce-up that morning, with teachers working alongside community residents and parents to mow lawns, weed, sweep and clear debris from the school's playground.

This year, participating men, women and children are asked to bring gloves, rakes and shovels. Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and plenty of drinking water should also be a consideration.

Groups will leave for their various work projects by 8:30 a.m. Participants are then invited to meet up with the entire group at noon to enjoy a social and a provided lunch at the lowest Water Canyon campground.

"We want to come together as friends and neighbors and do our part to help keep Winnemucca a place we are proud to call home," said Winnemucca Ministerial Association Vice President Pastor Gayle Basten.

"When we join hands to serve, our hearts become united," she added. "I think our goal here is to simply reach out in any way that we can to do good."
