Mildred Carrie Edmunds Engstrom died peacefully in the evening of Nov. 3, 2011, after a brief illness. She was born on March 2, 1923, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Hugh and Fern Edmunds. Mildred's grandparents settled in Winnemucca in 1911, and her family joined them when she was a year and a half. She attended Winnemucca Grammar school and graduated from Humboldt County High School in 1941.
After high school Mildred worked in the business office of Bell Telephone where she continued to work until the early 60's. She also was employed by several local businesses as a bookkeeper through the years including Tallman Lumber Company and Stockmen's clothing store.
Mildred met and married the love of her life, Donald Engstrom in 1949. They were inseparable for nearly 62 years. They enjoyed being at home and spending time together working jigsaw puzzles as well as traveling with senior tours to many places such as Switzerland, Australia, Spain, London, Alaska and Hawaii. Mildred was a lifetime member of the Winnemucca United Methodist Church where she was involved in many activities including choir, Sunday school, United Methodist's Women and various committees. She was also a past member of Beta Sigma Phi, PEO Sisterhood and the Hospital Auxiliary.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Donald in August of 2011, her parents, brothers James & Kenneth Edmunds and stepmother Beatrice Jones Edmunds. She is survived by her son Charles and his wife Debbie, and grandchildren Megan (Kevin) Brown, Mark Engstrom, Kelsey (Kyle) Garis, and Katie Engstrom, great-grandchildren Dane and Ellie Brown, sister-in-law Jo Edmunds and two nephews, James and Jerry Edmunds.
Graveside services were held Monday, Nov. 7, in Winnemucca with Lovelock Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Church memorial fund, 138 W. Winnemucca Blvd., Winnemucca, NV 89445.
