McDermitt's Sherburn signs letter of intent to play basketball at Great Falls

MCDERMITT - When Sharon Sherburn went to Great Falls, Mont., to visit a former high school teammate, the last thing she thought would happen was signing with the women's basketball team at the University of Great Falls.

The McDermitt High School senior caught the eye of head coach Bill Himmelberg, through the help of a rival team. The Lady Bulldogs did not send a tape of Sherburn to the Lady Argos, but when Himmelberg watched a tape of Eureka playing McDermitt, he was sold on the 6 foot, 2 inch post player.

"I was actually really surprised and not expecting it at all," Sherburn said. "I went through a tour up there and the coach said 'I have seen you play and would like to have you up here.' Eureka sent in a game tape of one of their girls when they were playing us. It was pretty awesome and a whirlwind kind of deal."

The Lady Argos are a NAIA member and play in the Frontier Conference. Great Falls went 8-19 overall and 3-12 in the Frontier Conference last year. The Lady Argos are currently 2-1 this season.

"We are excited that Sharon has chosen to join us next season," Himmelberg said in a press release from the school. "She is a solid rebounder and is good around the basket. Sharon is an excellent student and will be a great addition to our university."

The Frontier Conference includes College of Idaho, Dickinson State University, Eastern Oregon, Lewis-Clark State, Montana Tech, Montana Western, MSU-Northern, Rocky Mountain College, Southern Oregon University and Westminster College.

In 22 games, during the 2011-12 season, Sherburn shot 42 percent from the floor with a 49 percent free throw shooting average. She scored 259 points for an average of 11.8 points per game. Defensively, Sherburn pulled down 220 rebounds, averaging 10 per game. In addition, she had 13 blocks and 25 steals.

Sherburn said she will start on the junior varsity program at Great Falls. She is looking to study business management.

"When I went to the university I instantly fell in love with the atmosphere", Sherburn said. "Even though it is a university, it is still small. It fits my country lifestyle just about perfectly. I can get used to the college atmosphere and work my way up to varsity. They have a great business program and it's small and that's what I love about it. I come from a small town and I just don't want to jump into a big city."
