WINNEMUCCA - The McDermitt High School track and field team qualified three of its athletes for the state championships this weekend at Silverado High School in Las Vegas.
Tyler Coble turned in the best finish for the Bulldogs at the Division IV North Regional Championships last weekend at Yerington High School. He placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 1.50 inches. That mark was nearly 18 inches better than his seed jump of 34-7. Virginia City's Connor Bills won the event with a jump of 36.8.50.
Coble also earned a spot in the state championships in the high jump, as he placed third, clearing the bar at 5-8. That was eight inches higher than his seeding mark of 5-0. Virginia City's Jordan Popiela won at 6-0 and Eureka's Kevin Podborny was second with a mark of 5-10.
In addition, Coble competed in the discus and finished ninth with a throw of 100-9. The top four finishers in each event advance to the state championships.
Hawk Urban is headed to Las Vegas to throw the discus. The sophomore finished fourth with a throw of 112-5. Sierra Lutheran's Alex Morgan claimed the regional title with a toss of 132-1. Eureka's Dakota Howard (129-0) and Sierra Lutheran's Chase Johnson (119-9) were second and third, respectively.
Urban also competed in the shot put and was ninth with a throw of 35-1.50.
Brendan Wilson posted an eighth-place finish in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5 minutes, 38.42 seconds, which was nine seconds better than his seed time. Sage Ridge's John Dewald and Excel Christian's Zachary Hunt battled to the finish line, with Dewald winning by .87 seconds at 4:52.00.
Wilson added a 10th-place finish in the long jump, with a mark of 14-5, as the Bulldogs finished ninth as a team with 20 points.
Sierra Lutheran ran away with the team title with 147.50 points. Sage Ridge (102) was second, Virginia City (91) was third and Excel Christian (83) and Eureka (80) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Freshman Va Draunidalo was the only Lady Bulldog to compete and she reached the state championships in the high jump with a third-place finish. Draunidalo cleared 4-5, while Wells' Alyse Armstrong won the event at 4-8. Austin's Emily Young was second at 4-5. Young claimed second by missing fewer number of jumps
Draunidalo placed ninth in the discus with a toss of 62-10 and was 10th in the shot put at 23-3.50. She garnered six points for McDermitt in a 12th-place finish as a team.
Wells easily claimed the team title with 177 points. Sierra Lutheran (148) was second, Eureka (92) was third and Sage Ridge (65) and Carlin (45) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
The threesome from McDermitt travels to Las Vegas and Silverado High School on Friday and Saturday for the NIAA State Track and Field Championships. Action gets underway at 3 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturday.[[In-content Ad]]
