WINNEMUCCA - The McDermitt High School track and field team made the short trip south to Winnemucca on Saturday to compete in the Lowry Invitational as it gets ready for the regional championships this weekend.

Freshman Va Draunidalo had the best finish of the day for McDermitt, as she placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 6 inches. She was the top jumper among competitors in Division IV. Except for Draunidalo, the top 12 finishers were schools that are in Division I-A or Division III. Dayton's Madison Foley won with a height of 5-2 and Pershing County's Samantha Dennler was second at 5-0.

Draunidalo also competed in the shot put and discus and was 29th and 33rd, respectively, with marks of 22-7.50 and 62-3.

Spring Creek won the girls team championship with 158.17 points and Elko was second at 146. Churchill County (91.51), Dayton (90.85) and Lowry (63.51) rounded out the top five.

Eureka was the highest finishing Division IV school in 10th with nine points and Smith Valley (6) and Mineral County (2) were 12th and 13th. McDermitt was 15th with .85 points.

Tyler Coble was 16th in the high jump, as he cleared 5-0 to provide the best finish for the McDermitt boys. The junior was fourth among Division IV athletes. Elko's Brenden Williams won the event at 6-2 and Eureka's Kevin Podborny was second at 6-0. They were the only two to clear six feet. In addition, Coble finished 19th in the discus with a throw of 104-1.

Sophomore Hawk Urban finished 21st in the discus with a toss of 102-1 and he placed 32nd in the shot put at 33-9. Brendan Wilson had a leap of 14-1.50 to place 26th in the long jump and the junior was 31st in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5 minutes, 47.43 seconds.

The Bulldogs travel to Yerington on Friday and Saturday for the Division IV North Track and Field Championships. Action gets underway Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. The top four finishers in each event qualify for the Division IV State Track and Field Championships at Silverado High School on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18, in Las Vegas.[[In-content Ad]]
