McDermitt shooting suspect arraigned in district court

WINNEMUCCA - A McDermitt resident who allegedly fired a shotgun multiple times in the direction of another person in April was arraigned in Sixth District Court Monday on one felony charge.

Everette Jim, 21, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon in connection with an incident that happened April 3 near the Codero Mine Road in McDermitt.

According to a plea agreement, county prosecutors agreed to drop other charges related to the incident if Jim pleaded guilty.

At Monday's court hearing, Jim said he fired the shotgun in the air when the victim came at him with a knife. The victim was not hit by the shotgun blasts.

Deputy District Attorney Roger Whomes, citing police reports, offered another version of what happened that evening in McDermitt.

According to Whomes, one witness said Jim fired two rounds from the shotgun toward the victim near a McDermitt casino parking lot. Another witness said Jim fired four rounds.

The victim said it was his opinion that Jim was trying to kill him, Whomes said.

Jim will be sentenced on Sept. 24. The charge of assault with a deadly weapon brings a possible prison sentence of one to six years.
