MCDERMITT - McDermitt GEARUP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) had its second monthly GEARUP parent workshop. These workshops involve parents and GEARUP students in a series of seven monthly units aimed at enhancing parent and student knowledge of what it takes to be successful in life. The workshops also promote a college-going culture. These workshops are organized by Kelly Pinkston, McDermitt guidance counselor/GEARUP adviser.

On Oct. 30, the workshop consisted of an informative game where student and parents learned and discussed college terms. In addition, each parent and each 7th grader was introduced to 'Career Cruising.' "Career Cruising is an industry leading online career guidance and planning system. Students and adults use the tools to find the right career, explore education and training options, and build their own portfolio."

All students and parents took a career assessment test and results were discussed. They had a great turn out with over 85 percent of parents attending and 100 percent of GEARUP students attending. The next workshop will be on Nov. 27.
