MCDERMITT - The McDermitt Combined school GEARUP cohort consists of twelve 7th grade students. The GEARUP(Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) grant will follow these students until they graduate from McDermitt High school.
The cohort has five girls and seven boys. Services provided to the students and staff strongly support Nevada's four goals and include in school and after school tutoring, college visitations, extensive career and personal exploration, including financial awareness and literacy and targeted interventions in math, reading, science and writing.
In addition, GEARUP sponsors monthly parent meetings. We had our first parent meeting September 26, 2012. We had a great turn out with 99% of parents and students attending. Mrs. Kennedy (Principal) explained the new aspects of the grant. Mrs. Pinkston (Counselor and GEARUP advisor, facilitated a student/parent training on ways to improve a college going culture in our community.
