McDermitt gears up

MCDERMITT - On Feb. 25 McDermitt School had their monthly GEARUP meeting. Planned and organized by Tamela Berberick (GEARUP SPIF) and Kelly Pinkston (guidance counselor and GEARUP advisor). The speakers from UNR GEARUP program came to talk about college. Our speakers were: Katie Hill MA, Jafeth Sanchez PhD and Janet Usinger PhD.

Nevada's GEAR UP program offers opportunities for students (currently in grades seventh - eighth), parents, educators and schools. GEAR UP provides services to:

1. Significantly increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education.

2.Significantly increase GEAR UP students' and families' knowledge of post-secondary education options, preparation and financing.

3. Increase recruitment and enrollment of GEAR UP students in post-secondary education.

4.Raise the expectations of GEAR UP middle school personnel so as to create a college-going culture that provides all students with the tools necessary to apply for and succeed in post-secondary education and future careers.

5.Improve GEAR UP schools through coordination with school improvement plans and to increase a common understanding of P-16 articulation issues among Nevada middle and high schools. From: http://www.doe.nv.gov/GEARUP/

Currently, eighteen Nevada middle schools are receiving GEAR UP services. McDermitt School is the only school in the Humboldt district that has this grant.[[In-content Ad]]
