WINNEMUCCA - On May 8, members of the McDermitt seventh-grade GEARUP class took their first college field trip.
Kelly Pinkston (counselor and GEARUP adviser) worked with Lisa Campbell (GBC Winnemucca campus director) to set a day to visit the campus.
Campbell organized an outstanding day for the seventh-grade McDermitt GEARUP students and their parents. The day started with a tour of the campus. Then the group was able to meet Dr. Mark Curtis, GBC president, and Lynn Mahlberg, vice-president of student services, via the IAV video conference room.
The students then were then treated to an interactive lecture with the English teacher Beth Clifton. Campbell then planned for the group to meet with a student panel. The student panel participants were Camille and Cole Borquin, Tyler Ramirez-Bautista and Matthew Jones. They spoke with the group about life at college.
Later, McDermitt students were treated to a barbeque lunch and cake to welcome them to campus.
The highlight for most students was the visit to the biology lab. Professor Doug Hogan and a few of his students shared hands on demonstrations. Students were hooked up to an EKG machine and also were able to handle a human heart and brain. Many students and parents were excited to get to touch a human heart and learn what the different parts were called. In addition, professor Hogan shared his many snakes with the students.
The students and parents were very impressed with the GBC Winnemucca campus.
