The McDermitt High School football team wrapped up a stretch of three consecutive road trips last Friday night with a 42-14 loss to Wells. The defeat ended the run to the playoffs for the Bulldogs.
Wells used a block punt by Hunter Escamilla to take an 8-0 lead midway through the first quarter. McDermitt bounced back quickly and used a long run by Sonny Crutcher to cut the deficit to 8-6 with just under two minutes to play in the opening quarter. The Bulldogs were unsuccessful on the 2-point conversion.
Aided by a facemask penalty that kept the drive going, the Leopards scored 62 seconds into the second quarter on a pass from Wyatt Gibbs to Joey Gardner to make the score 16-6 after the made 2-point conversion.
The back and forth contest continued as McDermitt (0-5 Division IV East, 2-5 overall) struck back with a touchdown pass from Crutcher and the Bulldogs converted the conversion to 16-14. That turned out to be the final points for McDermitt, as it was all Wells from there.
The Leopards answered right back with a drive of its own, keeping the possession going after successfully completing a fourth and one play. Gibbs capped off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown, giving Wells a 22-14 lead after the missed 2-point conversion.
The Leopards go those two point right back, picking up a safety the next time the Bulldogs had the ball. Wells could not do anything with the ball the next time they had the ball, fumbling the ball back to McDermitt.
Wells regained possession one last time in the first half and turned into eight points after Gibbs used a quarterback sneak to score. Wells added the 2-point conversion to lead 30-14 at halftime. The two teams trade turnovers in the final 90 seconds of the half.
Wells used another touchdown by Gibbs early in the second quarter to push the gap to 36-14 after the missed 2-point conversion.
The Leopards closed out the scoring with 9:57 left in the game on a run by Matthew Beecher.
McDermitt rounds out its home slate of games Saturday against Eureka (3-2 Division IV East) at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs are also celebrating Homecoming.[[In-content Ad]]
