McDermitt closes out regular season at Lowry Invitational Hinkey places fourth in shot put

WINNEMUCCA - As the McDermitt High School track and field team prepares for the Northern 1A Regional Championships today and Saturday in Fallon, it closed out its regular season last Saturday in Winnemucca at the Lowry Invitational.

The Bulldogs were led by Ian Hinkey, who was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 45 feet, 3 inches. He was first among 1A schools, beating his next closest competition by three feet.

The senior reset the school record by one inch with his throw in Winnemucca.

The first three spots in the shot put were taken by 3A schools. He placed 20th in the discus at 99-03, which was third in the 1A.

"He is looking good right now," said MHS head coach Richard Egan. "He has been working in the weight room and getting stronger. He has set the school record in the shot two weeks in a row. He is looking to win that second straight state title. He has set the bar for future Bulldog throwers."

Frankie Hill was 14th in the 400 meters and 110-meter hurdles, respectively, with times of 56.92 and 18.62. His times were first among the 1A runners in those events. In addition, Hill placed 14th in the 400 meters in a time of 56.92 and 32nd in the discus with a throw of 87-02.

"Frankie has been running the 400 meters mainly for conditioning," Egan said. "We are going to put in the discus along with the two hurdle races and the triple jump. His two hurdle races and the triple jump are his strongest events. I feel comfortable he can make it to state in those events."

Freshman Hawk Urban made the trip to Winnemucca as well and was 33rd in the shot put with a toss of 33-03.50 and 35th in the discus at 83-08.

"Hawk has come a long way from the beginning of the season," said the coach. "His marks in the shot are about three to four feet further than they were at the start. We are looking to get him a couple of personal bests at the regional and that will be a good day for him."

As a team the Bulldogs were 14th with five points. Churchill County won the boys team title and Elko took home the girls top honors.

The previous week the squad was in Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, for the Mustang Invitational on April 28. Once again, Hinkey excelled as he won the shot put with a throw of 45-02 and was seventh in the discus at 102-02.

Hill turned in two runner-up finishes in the 110-meter hurdles at 18.24 and triple jump (37-10). The senior placed third in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 48.15 and was fourth in the 400 meters at 59.40. Urban placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 31-00 and was 11th in the discus at 77-09.

On the girls side, Elizabeth Jones earned a second-place finish in the shot put at 27-10 to go with a ninth-place outing in the discus at 59-02. Lesley Bravo was sixth in the discus at 62-01 and 10th in the shot put with a throw of 21-05.50.

The Bulldogs finished seventh for both the boys and girls with 39.50 and 11 points, respectively. Victory Charter won the boys title and Horseshoe Bend the girls.

McDermitt travels to Fallon for the 1A Regional Championships that begin at 3 p.m. today. Action gets underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The top four finishers in each event qualify for the state championships at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno on Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19.
