MCDERMITT - For the past six years, Kelly Pinkston, counselor at McDermitt Combined School, has been implementing "The McDermitt Character Trait of the Month Club." This club recognizes specific students every month who best demonstrate the monthly character trait. The guidance counselor teaches character trait lessons in the classroom. In addition, they send home information to parents about the trait and how they can help their children practice the trait.
Every month, each teacher picks one student, from each class (K-6) who best demonstrated the monthly character trait. That student goes to reward party at the end of the month provided by Pinkston.
The character trait for January 2012 was compassion. The winners included Nakoa Kakakaway (kindergarten), Nicolette Northrup (first grade), Tregan Catches (second grade), Justice Abel (third grade), Kylee Bennett (fourth grade), Jaxson Pinkston (fifth grade) and Cauy Crutcher (sixth grade).
