McDermitt boys stay hot, extend winning streak to nine

Bulldogs 2-0 in league play

The hot streak for the McDermitt High School boys basketball team continued in to the first week of league play.

The Bulldogs extended their win streak to nine games after beating Wells 61-53 on Friday, Jan. 9, and Jackpot 50-10 on Saturday. After starting the season with five straight losses, McDermitt is now 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the Division IV East.

"It was a good win for us in Wells," said MHS coach Jack Smith. "When you can win on the road it's always a good thing."

Wells grabbed the early 12-11 lead after a quarter of play, only to see McDermitt rally before halftime. The Bulldogs used a 19-11 run in the second quarter to lead 30-22 and never gave up the advantage from there.

"We got off to a slow start, but got going after the first quarter," Smith said. "It was a physical game."

The second half turned out to be a wash, as both schools scored 31 points in the final 16 minutes. Sonny Crutcher led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Crutcher also had seven rebounds and five assists.

"Sonny stepped up for us," Smith said. "He took over the ball for us and he is that kind of player that can do that."

Saul Lopez joined him in double figures with 14 points to go with three assists. Alex Rincon and TJ Smith each scored seven points, Ellison Tom added six and Edgar Reyes had five. Smith and Rincon added seven and six rebounds, respectively.

McDermitt had a much easier day on Saturday at Jackpot, beginning the game on a 34-2 run and cruised from there. The Jaguars did not score more than five points in any quarter and were shut out in the second quarter.

"Jackpot is down this year and have great kids," Smith said. "It was enjoyable to play up there. Everyone was nice up there."

Nine different players scored for the Bulldogs, with Lopez leading the way with 12. Crutcher added nine, Tom eight, Alec Dave, Smith, Rincon and Reyes four each, Jose Acosta three and Kyon Egan two.

Tom finished with seven rebounds, while Lopez had six steals and three assists.

"We are on a pretty good streak right now," Smith said. "The guys are buying in to what we want to do. It's a big weekend for us."
