WINNEMUCCA - There was no repeat of the last two years as the McDermitt High School boys basketball team exorcised demons of the past to win the Northern 1A championship on Saturday at Elko High School.
The Bulldogs (22-6) knocked off Owyhee 78-64 to win the conference title and pick up a fourth win over their rival this season.
After losing the past two years to Smith Valley in the regional tournament, McDermitt took out its frustrations on Smith Valley with a 66-29 win on Thursday night. The Bulldogs earned their way into the state tournament with a 74-60 win over Coleville (Calif.) on Friday.
McDermitt will face Pahranagat Valley on Friday at 4 p.m. at Lawlor Events Center in Reno on the campus of the University of Nevada.
Owyhee will face Spring Mountain, the Southern 1A champion, at 12:40 p.m., also at Lawlor. Spring Mountain upset Pahranagat Valley 49-47 on Saturday afternoon to win the Southern 1A championship.
The 1A boys state championship game is set for 12:45 p.m. at Lawlor.
