McDermitt boys knock off Eureka, girls fall to Vandals

Bulldogs taking part in regional championship

The McDermitt High School basketball teams closed out their regular season Feb. 14 in Eureka, with playoff implications on the line.

The Bulldog girls were battling for the top spot in the Division IV East but were knocked off 57-38 by the Vandals. Eureka used a 16-6 run in the second quarter to pull away. The Vandals are the defending state champion and finished second in 2012.

McDermitt (13-5 overall, 8-2 Division IV East) took on Mineral County in the opening round of the Division IV Regional Championship on Thursday in Reno. Results were not available at press time.

If the Bulldogs defeated the Serpents, they will take on the winner of Pyramid Lake/Jackpot at 6:20 p.m. at North Valleys High School on Friday. The championship game is set for noon, also at North Valleys High School. The top two teams advance to the state tournament, which will take place at Wooster High School and Lawlor Events Center on Feb. 28-March 1.

The McDermitt boys finished the regular season with a 56-52 win over Eureka, and earned the No. 3 seed from the East, a year after not making the playoffs.

The Bulldogs (11-7 overall, 7-3 Division IV East) raced out to a 17-5 lead in the first quarter and had to hold off a Vandal rally in the final three quarters. McDermitt maintained a nine-point advantage at halftime. Eureka outscored McDermitt 21-18 in the fourth quarter but could get no closer than four points.

McDermitt matched up with Virginia City in the first round of the regional tournament Thursday in Reno. Results were not available at press time.

If the Bulldogs win, they will meet the winner of Owyhee and Mineral County at 4:40 p.m. at North Valleys High School. The championship tips off at 2 p.m. Saturday at North Valleys High School. The top two two teams advance to the state tournament, which will take place at Wooster High School and Lawlor Events Center on Feb. 28-March 1.[[In-content Ad]]
