BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Nevada Department of Wildlife was pleased to award Marie Benson a "State of Nevada Trophy Fish Certificate" on Oct. 19 for her achievement and permanent record that will attest her skills and accomplishment in a truly fine sport.
The certificate is presented for each qualified "Trophy Fish" entry. The program has two underlying purposes. Prior to 1968, the year this program started, there were no official or reliable records of the various fish caught in Nevada waters. Therefore, no one was aware of the largest fish of each species caught, nor were they aware of the largest fish produced in various streams and lakes. Now the Department of Wildlife is recording these facts and has compiled an interesting list of these fish.
The Nevada Trophy Fish program also provides information concerning the quality of fishing in the state's streams and lakes. This, in turn, helps determine where the fisheries management program is succeeding and to what extent.
Starting Jan. 1, 1974, the awarding of the "State Record Trophy Fish Plaque" was based upon establishment of a new state record. Therefore, any fish entered which sets a new Nevada state record will be awarded a trophy plaque. An entrant whose fish is the largest entered for the year, but does not establish a new state record will receive special recognition by receiving a "Record Trophy Fish of the Year Certificate."
Congratulations Marie Benson on your trophy fish of the year for 2011 and many thanks for participation in the Nevada Trophy Fish Program.
