Winnemucca Native Margaret H. Smith passed away at her home peacefully in Winnemucca at the age of 90 on July 11, 2012.

She was born June 5, 1922, to Harold and Olive Guthrie Haviland, and was a lifetime resident. Margaret's Great Grandfather Mark Haviland founded the Cottonwood Creek Ranch in Paradise Valley, Humboldt in 1865. Margaret's Grandfather Carl Haviland was the first mayor of Winnemucca in 1917-18.

Margaret was educated in Winnemucca and a Graduate of Humboldt County High School in 1940. She was a long time employee of Sonoma Inn, Johnson Food Town, and Winnemucca Farms.

Margaret's passion was taking care of her family and when her sister, Rosemary passed away, Margaret with no hesitation brought her sister's children into her home and raised them as her own. She was also a dedicated caregiver to her own Mother taking care of her until the end.

Margaret was an amazing Mother, Grandmother, Sister and friend. She loved to embrace her family in their rich history in Humboldt County. She cherished every memory through pictures, stories, and notes and thanks to her, the history will continue to live through the generations.

Margaret was awarded "Women of the Year" along with many other accomplishments in her life.

She was proceeded in death by Father, Harold Haviland, Mother, Olive Guthrie Haviland, sister, Rosemary Vermillion White, and brother, Robert Haviland.

Surviving are her daughters, Sharon Allen of Winnemucca, Gay Lynn (Fred) Miller of Paradise Valley, Melissa Smith of Carson City and son George Tom (Ana Marie) Smith of Winnemucca.

Rosemary Vermillion Whites' Children: Nikki (Harvey) Blackwell of Long Creek, Ore., Kathy (Bob) Buckingham of Paradise Valley, Tony (Patricia) Vermillion of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Heidi Lee of Elko.

Sister Claire Barry (Walter) Per of Alameda, Calif., and Brothers Arthur Haviland of Jamesville, Calif., Carlton (Cheryl) Haviland of Doyle, Calif. 8 Grandchildren, 12 Great grandchildren, 1 Great-Great Grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A viewing at 9 a.m. followed by funeral at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Winnemucca Methodist Church, with burial at the Winnemucca Cemetery.

Memorials are being established with the Humboldt County Library, 85 E. Fifth St. Winnemucca NV 89445, or the Winnemucca Methodist Church, 138 W. Winnemucca Blvd., Winnemucca NV 89445.

Arrangements are under the direction of Albertson Funeral Home.
