WINNEMUCCA - Local law enforcement officials served a search warrant Thursday at a local residence in connection with a recent burglary at Walmart and arrested one individual and recovered numerous items of stolen property.
Detectives from the Winnemucca Police Department and Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Tri-County Special Response Team, arrested Alex Velasco, 36, on an outstanding arrest warrant at a residence on Sunset Drive in the Grass Valley area.
According to a news release, WPD detectives received information on March 29 regarding a burglary that had occurred at Walmart in the evening hours of March 27. The information indicated that two or possibly three individuals had entered Walmart, placed items in a shopping cart and walked out of the store without paying for the items. The individuals then returned to the store and attempted to remove a flat screen television from the store without paying for it but were interrupted by Walmart loss prevention personnel.
During the course of the investigation WPD detectives were able to identify one of the individuals as Velasco. Velasco was identified from Walmart surveillance footage. An arrest warrant was obtained for Velasco charging him with the crime of burglary. Along with the arrest warrant, a search warrant was obtained authorizing law enforcement to search Velasco's residence and property located at 7990 Sunset Drive.
While detectives were conducting the search on Thursday, Velasco arrived on scene and was taken into custody on the outstanding arrest warrant. He was transported to the Humboldt County Jail where he was booked. His initial bail was set at $20,000. Additional charges are anticipated, according to the WPD statement.
During the search of Velasco's residence detectives recovered numerous items of stolen property ranging from electronic equipment to miscellaneous tools. These items were seized and are being held at the Winnemucca Police Department.
