PHOENIX - Jessica A. Mahon of Battle Mountain recently earned a Master's degree in Social Work from Arizona State University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Gender Studies from the University of Notre Dame in 2010 and is a 2006 graduate of Battle Mountain High School.
Mahon completed the MSW Program with a concentration in Program Planning, Administration and Community Practice and earned 4.0 GPA during her tenure. Her extra-curricular activities included involvement in Phi Alpha, the national social work honor society, and serving as an asset educator at a local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site.
While at ASU, Mahon completed two internship placements to supplement her academic study. At one n ten, a youth organization serving Metropolitan Phoenix, she worked to provide empowering social services to youth at risk and develop tools to assist local social service agencies in providing culturally competent services to youth experiencing homelessness. Mahon played a key role in the expansion of the organization's programming and the improvement of training tools for volunteers.
At the Arizona Community Action Association, Mahon was involved with a number of anti-poverty initiatives that aimed to empower low-income Arizonans and strengthen communities. She engaged in community forums, advocacy trainings, as well as voter outreach and registration efforts. Mahon worked to promote high-impact asset building strategies as a means of alleviating and preventing poverty, and designed an Individual Development Account program to address the economic and educational disparities affecting youth leaving the foster care system.
Mahon currently works with Equality Arizona as an Administration and Development Associate. Her professional interests include youth empowerment, social policy, community organizing and political and social advocacy, and she plans to pursue career opportunities in the nonprofit sector.
