Maestrejuan brothers will lead 2012 Basque Festival Parade

The weekend will include everything from the first parade of summer to other favorites such as games of strength and endurance, the traditional sheepherder's picnic and Saturday night's popular dance. A traditional Basque breakfast will follow Sunday morning.

The Basque Parade will begin 11 a.m. Saturday as the brothers lead the summer's first procession down Winnemucca Boulevard.

Frank and Tobin's father, Joseph Maestrejuan, was born to Josephine and Fernando Maestrejuan in Los Angeles, Calif. Josephine was born and raised at Porcupine Ranch.

Joseph met Bonnie June Burke at the Sonoma Inn; the two were married in 1956 and had three boys together: Rick, Tobin and Frank.

Frank Victor Maestrejuan was born in Winnemucca in 1958, and Tobin Gale Maestrejuan was born in Caliente in 1959. The family traveled all over Nevada for several years while Joe worked for the Department of Transportation.

Joseph passed in 1968 and Bonnie remarried Raymond Zabala in 1969. Ray and Bonnie raised the three boys in Winnemucca. In the summer the boys would work out in the hay fields at Quinn River, Jackson Creek and Dufurrena Ranches. Both boys graduated from Albert Lowry High School and have raised their families in Winnemucca.

Frank married Stella in 1989 and they have three children: Nikki, Keifer and Jeramiah. Frank has worked for the City of Winnemucca for 30 years; he is currently a supervisor for the Parks & Recreation Department.

Tobin married Tina in 1996 and they have two children: Dillon and Sierra. Tobin is currently employed by Newmont Gold Corporation.

Both men have donated countless hours cooking chorizos and steak at each year's Basque Festival for the past 10 years. They also volunteer time with setup, cleaning after club events and bartending.

Festival organizers said being named Grand Marshalls is a fitting tribute to the two men who have done so much for the local club. Eskerrik Asko for all your hard work!
